Hilderthorpe Steam Event

Students and science/art staff spent an afternoon at Hilderthorpe Primary School delivering a STEAM event which was a continuation of the induction day project from earlier this year.

The Year 6 students learnt about colour and the pigments in leaves that are responsible for photosynthesis. They used chromatography to separate the colours in leaves.
They were then asked to use their science knowledge as the design for a hat. Different techniques for folding and various types of paper were used to create the hat.

Despite being rushed, the students created some amazing pieces of art - the winning hat was made of 7 leaves, each one a colour of the visible light spectrum. Very cleverly, some students incorporated their chromatogram into their hat.

We would like to congratulate the Hilderthorpe students on their enthusiasm and creativity and look forward to working with them again.
