Course Content

Psychology offers a fascinating exploration of the human mind and behaviour that can shape understanding of ourselves and others. Studying psychology equips students with a range of valuable skills including critical thinking, research, communication, problem solving and analytical.

Students will study the following compulsory units;

1. Cognition and behaviour

Ø  Memory

Ø  Perception

Ø  Development

Ø  Research methods

2. Social context and behaviour

Ø  Social influence

Ø  Language, thought and communication

Ø  Brain and neuropsychology

Ø  Psychological problems

Assessment

100% exam – Students will sit two papers at the end of year 11

Paper 1: Cognition and behaviour

Paper 2: Social context and behaviour

Both are written exams (1 hour 45 minutes) and are 50% each of the GCSE. Students will be expected to draw on knowledge and understanding of the entire course of study to show a deeper understanding of these topics.

The exam papers include multiple choice, short answer and extended writing.

Progression

 

Students can progress to study a level 3 programme including A Level Psychology and then progress onto university.

Future careers: There are many occupations linked to psychology for those students who wish to study the subject at a higher level including forensic psychology, business psychology, clinical psychology, educational psychology, mental health nursing and many more!
